Do something that scares you.

Yes. As cliché as it may sound, I’m serious.

All too often I’m reminded that life is too short. Yesterday Trooper and I were out for a walk and on an already gloomy day, we decided to take a detour to the dog park to play for a few minutes. Out of nowhere, the sky opened up and just started pouring.  In a matter of a few seconds, I went from completely annoyed to feeling like a kid again. Trooper and I played in the rain until we were soaking wet and covered in mud.

This reminded me a of when I was in middle school – there was a group of four girls that used to hang out all the time and every time it rained, we made the most of it. We played for hours until our fingers looked like prunes or we got so cold we couldn’t stand it anymore.

Sadly, only one of those four girls is still a part of my life today. Everyone still lives near by but life has led us down different paths and a lot of time has passed since a falling out way back when.

There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about the times I had with those girls. We cheered together, laughed together, cried together, played together – got in trouble together! Being a military brat, I didn’t have a ton of opportunities to form these types of friendships.

Today, I decided enough is enough. I miss these girls. And, although we can never get back the years we’ve lost, we all have a ton of years ahead of us. So, with my heart pounding in fear, I drafted a note. Then I deleted it… then I wrote it again… and again. Finally, two hours later – I hit send.  If I don’t hear back, I hope it made everyone smile even if only for a moment.

I did something that scared me… and I’m so glad I did.
